A Needed Dose of Magic

Yesterday, while riding my bike further 
than I thought I could go, 
too hot, too tired, 
legs barely moving,

an orange butterfly 
flew alongside me, distracted me
from the discomfort, brought softness
to what felt too hard—

this bright winged one gave me
a needed dose of magic 
when I thought I couldn't go on.

Of course, it made me think of them—
bright and winged, bringing softness
to what feels too, too hard.
