Setting it Down
Setting it Down
I keep trying to drum away the dullness, swat away the sorrow, water the weeds hoping something beautiful will grow. But, this tug of war, this trying to squeeze into shoes I have long outgrown, makes everything hurt. And, when the hurt becomes too much, I lean toward the mirror and ask: What? What do you need? And I wait and wait for the answer. I wait until I hear: Darling, it is not possible to trade the holes for the holy, the holes are what bring you here— make your lap bigger, allow smallness to rest her tired head until she hears, until she is heard, until she remembers that flowers, somehow, manage to grow from the cracks in everything, that wounded birds still, somehow, manage to fly— until she sets down the great burden of trying—until beautiful, holy things can't help but grow. ©Julia Fehrenbacher Image found on Pinterest
