Asking Questions

Today I saved three flies, watered 
the geraniums, the echinacea, the jasmine, 

mixed sugar and hot water to make nectar 
for the sweet, sweet hummingbirds, 

happily listened while my daughters
told me about their very alive lives, 

took an evening walk 
with the man I said I do to, 

jotted down words 
that didn't come close—

paused to listen to the wind's song,
bent to pet the dog and the cat, 

prayed and prayed 
for the world, asked:

What can I do? Please show me.

Breathed deeply as I felt the ache 
of being unable to save anything, 
aside from the occasional fly.

Oh, sweet-scented jasmine, please show me 
how to scatter sweetness 
like you do.
