Rebelling Against the Too Much
What sweet relief it is to know that I am (mostly) not in control, that, whatever lofty ideas, intentions, expectations, this mind has, the mark will most certainly be missed— the disappointments will arrive, one after another, the plans canceled, the virus will still come uninvited and stay way too long. Whatever I thought I knew yesterday, has already been forgotten— what was that again? In a world of rapid-fire overload, is it no wonder that we are entirely overwhelmed? It's all just too much. I am rebelling against the too much. Instead, I will sit here on the front porch with my coffee, eat fresh grapefruit, one extra slow bite after another, I will relish the long conversation over tea, the extra long hug, the line of poetry— crumbs of quiet in the midst of the too too too much.

Letting go of the too-much is not only rebellious, it is (I suspect!) what Judaism calls "tikkun olam" --- that is to say, repairing the world. And if not the world, then our small corner of it. I sing praise to the slow sipper of coffee. I bow to the careful eater of grapefruit.
