The One Who Notices

Let me notice that I am not 
the thoughts, not the stories, 

not the thoughts inside the stories,
not the stories inside the thoughts—

not what happened 
or didn't happen—

not what they told me I was
and was not. Let me know 

that I am the one who notices, the one 
who sits and listens to the dark 
and the light, 

the one who rests and watches 
while life does what life does—

watches while 
the whole wild world 

flails and falls and flees 
and forgets and forgets 
who they are.
