I did the exercise just now. I got to the edge of trauma, and like a little lad reconsidering a high dive from a diving board, scurried back down the ladder. "We should be as clear," Marianne Moore tells us, "as our natural reticence allows us to be." But I did hint at what I couldn't say, and I feel the time I spent writing (freewheeling, vivid, mostly unselfconscious) had value.
